In His Steps "What Would Jesus Do? " Charles M Sheldon 9780557463664 Books

I found a small book among my hardcover books. I don't remember how I obtained this small hardcover book. I opened the book. The pages were very old. The cover binding was fragile. The print was small, difficult to read. I was surprised to find it among kindle books. I ordered it. I couldn't wait to get back to this book each day in my reading time. The story was written in 1896. Nothing in our world has changed. There are still people begging for work, suicides, stealing, drugs, killings, greed, lost souls and selfishness. For me, I am now asking that age old question. "What would Jesus do?" This book has made me think more about what I can do to help others. I find when I ask this question, the answer comes to me. I have rediscovered faith, reading the Bible and ask for forgiveness and guidance. A renewal because of a small delicate book fell of a shelf on to the floor for my eyes to find and a strong push for me to read. I am thankful. I highly recommend this 294 page book. Those pages are full of thought-provoking words and not a fast, closed, the end story. This story is truly what Jesus taught, continues to teach. "See the unseen, hear the unheard." Amen.

In His Steps "What Would Jesus Do? " Charles M Sheldon 9780557463664 Books Reviews

This is an old book, written in a style not common to contemporary literature. The focus of the message, however, is one that should be considered by all. This is the book that first asked the question, "What would Jesus do?" Admittedly idealistic, the narrative nevertheless paints a picture of the results of complete dedication to the teachings of Jesus Christ.
If you enjoy sitting down with a classic novel and are drawn to works of religious literature, this book is for you.
With incredible insight, Mr. Sheldon describes and creates characters that are exceedingly lifelike and deserve the reader's complete attention.
Without giving anything away, the book's situations still provide relevance today, and the problems presented, though set in a different time, challenged my perspectives on many aspects of humanity and our relationship to Jesus Christ.
How committed are we, as Christians, to what Christ truly describes and desires?
The originator of the popular phrase "What Would Jesus Do?" has created a timeless classic, and this novel is well worth your time and money.
I had never heard of this book before "coincidentally" (is there such a thing?) stumbling upon an obscure reference to it. It truly was a book that forced you to stop and reflect on your own life. It made me squirm uncomfortably in my chair several times when addressing how much a person's life could be impacted unpleasantly, but necessarily, if you truly chose to follow the narrow trail that Christ broke for us in this wilderness we call Life. What I loved best about the story was how the author didn't sugarcoat just how tough life could get for someone who fully and unequivocally committed to emulating Christ--it wasn't simply a "...and they all lived happily ever after" story. Yet, with that said, it made me determined to clean up my act and start living the faith, rather than just going through the motions. Very well written.
I'd rate this high on a list of must reads. It is a great story of a church and its congregation stepping up to ask the question; What would Jesus do? And then, answering it by its actions. I give this book out as a gift to those who are searching for what to do for Jesus, by asking this simple question of themselves.
Everyone should read this book ... I know, I know, you're thinking what could a book written at the turn of the 1900s possible say to the modern Christian about living in today's world? Well, this book really changed the way I looked at my daily life from start to finish.
American Christianity has had its share of curious activities. Every so often a fad seems to rise up and dominate the evangelical landscape. Often starting in the content of a book, some popular phrase is born and begins to take on a life of its own. Without warning, a mad rush for merchandising is born as every believer looks to board the bandwagon. There have been prayer coins minted with the words of Jabez and coffee mugs emblazoned with 40 Days of Purpose. Musical recordings were packaged to promote the Promise Keeper movement while calendars, bookmarks, t-shirts, and every other printable surface was used to share the Left Behind phenomenon. However, in the mid-nineties there was one craze that topped them all - a bracelet carrying the letters "WWJD?". In its initial concept, it was designed to remind the wearer to ask "What Would Jesus Do" while promoting conversations with non-believers. Unfortunately, the meaning was lost in the fashion craze that ensued. Most wearers had no knowledge of the book upon which the question was based. Such an oversight is sad, for the classic book, In His Steps, by Charles M. Sheldon carries a powerful truth on living out the Christian life.

Originally published in 1896, this fictional story focuses on a church congregation upended by the challenge to live out a calendar year centered on one question "What Would Jesus Do?". As the chapters unfold, the respondents' lives are chronicled. Several characters face life-changing dilemmas and tough decisions. Some are quick to drop their pledge but others stay the course and watch the power of God unfold through their surrender to His sufficiency. Eventually, the church is caught in a bit of chaos as certain members feel the pressure to put God's word into practice and balk. Seeing others sacrifice all for Christ reveals their empty claims to faith and ultimately drives them away. In the end, this purified church begins to affect the community and spread its message into cities that once seemed far beyond their reach.

In publication for well over a hundred years, In His Steps has resonated with generations of readers. Although written as a fictional narrative, the book is much more than a simple story. It teaches truth. Penned by the hand of a pastor, the prose speaks to the questions often running through the minds of people in the pews. The daily challenge to put the word of God into practice is difficult. Many times, church members wonder how to take a sermon and apply it in a meaningful way. Charles Sheldon has done a great service of outlining the answer to these issues as each of his characters struggles through the same problem. From business men to talented artists the implications of being a Christ follower are examined. From those with wealth to those with little resources, the practicality of faithfulness to God is laid bare. Although the book refuses to lay out a series of action steps for the reader to follow, it does teach one how to consider Christ before undertaking any action. Taken together as a whole, the way Charles Sheldon handles his subject has led to this work's status as a Christian classic.
